On the Polarization Analysis of Optical Beams for Use in Quantum Communications between Earth and Space

چکیده
In this work we will address the transformation of the polarization state of single photons during the transmission along a Space channel and the measures to correct them in order to accomplish Quantum Communication (QC) between Space and Earth. An open issue in space scale QC is the preservation of polarization states by the telescope and all the involved moving optical components, as well as ensuring the alignment of the polarization basis between the orbiting sender and receiver on Earth. In the following, we will treat in detail this crucial aspect, by modelling the measurement of the polarization properties of the quantum channel, expressed by its Mueller matrix, in the experimental conditions of Ref. [12] with the addition of the control of the outbound state of the photons and the measure of the polarization state of the inbound beam.

The recognition in the 1990s that light beams with a helical phase front have orbital angular momentum has benefited applications ranging from optical manipulation to quantum information processing. Recently, attention has been directed towards the opportunities for harnessing such beams in communications. Here, we demonstrate that four light beams with different values of orbital angular momen...

Multiple-degrees-of-freedom free-space communication combining polarization and high-order spatial modes promises high-capacity communication channel. While high-order spatial modes have been widely exploited for dense coding and high-dimensional quantum information processing, the properties of polarization preservation of high-order spatial beams propagating in turbulent atmosphere have not b...

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest, theoretically as well as experimentally, in space-variant polarization manipulation for obtaining vectorial beams. In general, vectorial beams are defined as beams having space-variant (transversely nonuniform) polarization state. In this lecture we present new methods for designing, realizing and analyzing nonuniformly polarized and partial polar...

The modulation response, relative intensity noise (RIN) and frequency noise (FN) characteristics of quantum dot (QD) lasers are investigated theoretically in the presence of an external optical beam. Using small signal analysis of the rate equations for carriers and photons, it is demonstrated that by injecting excess carriers into the QDs excited state through optical pumping, the modulation r...
